Riding a motorbike in traffic can be one of the most dangerous parts of riding and coupled with distractions for both car drivers and bikers alike there is no such thing as minor bump on a bike.
Being a motorcyclist, you are the only person who you can rely on to travel safely so I have put together five tips you should always be thinking about when riding through traffic
Watch your Arse
Luckily in the UK using a mobile device while driving is now illegal and the penalties are harsh, but as a motorcyclist, this does make me feel safer at junctions because there is more of a chance that the driver behind might see me.
However, when I’m sat at a red light, I am constantly looking in my mirrors to monitor the traffic to see if they are going to stop in time. If you don’t think a driver has seen you, you can then hopefully get out the way.
Stand Out
I always like wearing black and white clothing and a bit of colour as well but I ride with a few people who like to wear all-black, and they literally blend into the scenery. My helmet choice has always been helped by trying to stand out, and hopefully, you do wear one, but this simple, easy thing to do is a life saver.
I am not saying we all should go out and buy Polite vests but simply mixing the colours up on your clothing will help you stand out in traffic and at junctions.
Be ready To Brake
Cover your front brakes especially when filtering through traffic will be a life saver as having your hand over the front brake will save critical moments and could be the difference between a shit your pants near miss moment or ending up in the back of an ambulance.
It may sound silly but that split second from you getting your fingers off the throttle and then reaching for the lever could be fatal.
Waggle your Light
If you see a car that may be waiting to turn in front of you give your handle bars a confident waggle. This will move your headlight around and either catch the attention of the car drivers coming towards you. If you are following a car move about the lane to try and catch your light in their mirrors and this should hopefully wake the driver up and show them you are there.
They All Want To Kill You
When I first passed my test the main bit of advice, I was given was that every driver out there is trying to kill you and you need to be aware of that and long with every driver wants to kill you. Also, remember that all drivers are blind so for god’s sake assume that nobody has seen you and be prepared to stop and get out the way.
Motorcycling is fun and exciting but it is dangerous so staying alive is paramount for your enjoyment, so please ride safely so that your loved ones can see you when you get home.
